Graduate Work Stream

This stream is for overseas students who have met the Australian study requirement in the last 6 months and have skills and qualifications in certain skilled occupations. The visa is valid for 18 months and has unrestricted work and study conditions.

At the time you apply for this visa you must:

• be in Australia;

• be under 50 years of age;

• hold a valid visa;

• hold or have held an eligible Student visa in the last 6 months;

• have met the Australian study requirement in the last 6 months;

• have applied for a skills assessment in your nominated occupation from the Skilled Occupation List (SOL) Schedule 1;

• have evidence that you, and all persons included in this application who require an assessment, have booked or undergone a medical examination for the purpose of this visa application;

• have evidence that you, and all persons included in this application, have adequate health insurance for the duration of visa validity;

• have evidence you have applied for a check of criminal records with the Australian Federal Police for you and all persons included in this application who are aged 16 years or over; and

• have evidence of the required level of English at the time you apply for your visa.

A current passport from the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, New Zealand or the Republic of Ireland (and you are a citizen of that country).

A score of at least 6 on each of the four components of speaking, reading, listening and writing in a single International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test you sat no more than three years before you apply. You must have this result before you apply.

You must have adequate health insurance in Australia unless you are covered by Medicare. You should ensure your insurance will provide at least the level of coverage required for the purpose of your stay. Your health insurer may be in either Australia or overseas.

If you hold a passport from the Republic of Ireland you are not required to provide evidence of having health insurance in Australia. If you are outside Australia when you apply and cannot produce a Medicare card or receipt, and you are eligible for Medicare under a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement, you should make arrangements for adequate travel or health insurance and then enrol with Medicare after you arrive in Australia. The department will not accept Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) and Overseas Visitors Health Cover (OVHC) for this visa. If you have an OSHC health insurance policy, contact your insurance provider to discuss your options.

Post-Study Work Stream

This stream is for overseas students who have completed an eligible qualification in Australia and have met the Australian study requirement in the last 6 months. This stream is only available to students who applied for and were granted their first Student visa to Australia on or after 5 November 2011.

Qualifications

In the past six months you must have completed one or more of the following qualifications at an Australian educational institution:

  • bachelor degree
  • bachelor degree with honours
  • masters by coursework degree
  • masters (extended) degree
  • masters by research
  • degree doctoral degree.

 

The visa is valid for:

• 2 years for students who complete a Bachelor degree (including honours) or Masters by Coursework degree or Masters (extended) degree;

• 3 years for students who complete a Masters by Research degree;

• 4 years for students who complete a Doctoral degree. This visa has unrestricted work and study conditions.

At the time you apply for this visa you must:

• be in Australia;

• be under 50 years of age;

• hold a valid visa;

• hold or have held an eligible Student visa in the last 6 months;

• have met the Australian study requirement in the last 6 months;

• have applied for and subsequently been granted your first Student visa on or after 5 November 2011;

• have completed an eligible qualification at an eligible institution in the last 6 months;

• have evidence that you, and all persons included in this application who require an assessment, have booked or undergone a medical examination for the purpose of this visa application;

• have evidence that you, and all persons included in this application, have adequate health insurance for the duration of visa validity;

• have evidence you have applied for a check of criminal records with the Australian Federal Police for you and all persons included in this application who are aged 16 years or over; and

• have evidence of the required level of English at the time you apply for your visa.

SKILLED RECOGNISED GRADUATE TEMPORARY (476)

 

This visa allows recent graduates of selected overseas universities to gain up to 18 months of skilled work experience in occupations in demand in Australia. This mainly applies to recent Engineering graduates.

As a holder of this visa, you may apply for permanent residence at any time if you are able to meet the passmark on the General Skilled Migration points test.

You can apply for this visa if you completed an Engineering degree at a recognised overseas institution in the last two years. Contact us to find out if your overseas institution is recognised. This visa does not have a points test but other requirements must be met.

You may include the following secondary applicants in your visa application:

partner
a dependent child of you or your partner
a dependent relative of you or your partner.

This visa allows you and any secondary applicants included in your visa application to remain in Australia for up to 18 months with no restrictions on work or study.  During this period you may choose to:

undertake further professional studies

study to improve your English skills.

You must meet all of the following requirements:

you are less than 31 years of age

you meet the English language threshold

The English language threshold is at the competent English level which is a minimum score of 6 in each of the four components of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test system or other language test and score specified by the Minister. While no points will be awarded for competent English, if you have obtained this score you are able to apply for a visa as long as you meet the other threshold visa requirements.

You are deemed to meet the English Language threshold competent English if you hold a valid passport from, and are a citizen of, one of the following countries:

United Kingdom (UK)
Canada
New Zealand
United States of America (USA)
Republic of Ireland.
Your test must have been completed before your visa application is lodged and be from a test you sat no more than two years before the day of making your application.
